Moore suspended by Tranmere Rovers

Ronnie Moore (Eric The Fish)
61-year-old Ronnie Moore has been suspended as manager of Tranmere Rovers today, pending a Football Association investigation into a potential breach of betting rules. It seems that this couldn't have come at a worse time, with the Prenton Park club only two points clear of the League One relegation zone, albeit with a game in hand.

The club released an official statement which read: "Tranmere Rovers have today announced that with immediate effect manager Ronnie Moore has been suspended until the conclusion of a Football Association investigation into a potential breach of betting rules. Assistant manager John McMahon has been placed in temporary charge of first-team affairs."

With the recent reports of betting breaches, including those of striker DJ Campbell and winger Christian Montano, who coincidentally played for one of Moore's former clubs Oldham, have shown that the National Crime Agency are cracking down on the issue harder than ever before.

Even if Moore has done nothing wrong, these recent stories show that both players, managers and staff at football clubs need to be further educated. Current rules stop football figures betting on competitions in which they are involved. Is a rule needed whereby football players, managers and staff should not be able to bet on football at all? It may stop potential problems like Moore has found himself in.

Player Watch - Daniel Bentley

Shot stopper Bentley (picture by Mattythewhite)
Southend United goalkeeper Daniel Bentley is currently making a name for himself in League Two. The commanding keeper stands at 6 foot 4, and has been touted by some to reach the highest levels.

At 20 years old, Bentley originally began his career at Arsenal, being snapped up by the Gunners when he was 8 years old. After being released in 2008, the Shrimpers were quick to sign Bentley up.

Playing for the Under 18's, Bentley started to receive plaudits from Southend's Youth Manager Ricky Duncan, who has a good eye when it comes to finding a decent young player.

In 2009 Bentley was handed a professional contract, subsequently making his professional debut in 2011. This season he has pushed Paul Smith onto the bench and has established himself as a first team regular.

Manager Phil Brown has stated that he believes Bentley can play for England one day. Not completely unbelievable if you take into account that the current England goalkeeper, Joe Hart, was playing for Shrewsbury from 2003 to 2006.

At such a young age, Bentley already has the characteristics of a great goalkeeper. He commands his box, can save penalties and is fantastic at shot-stopping. To be honest, it is surprising that he hasn't been snapped up by a club higher up the football ladder already. He is far too good to be playing in League Two, but at only 20 years old, he needs to be playing week-in week-out and that's what Southend can offer him.

There is not a doubt in my mind that Bentley is worth around £750,000 - £1 million at the moment. Southend have done well to tie him down to a long term contract which he signed not so long ago.

He seems to be enjoying life at Southend at the moment and he is definitely a fans favourite. However, Southend need to gain promotion this season, otherwise bigger clubs may come knocking and Bentley may want to go.

One thing's for sure, the lad will go far.

Bentley saves a penalty in Southend's recent 2-0 win at home to Northampton.

Davids Leaves The Bees

Edgar Davids has "resigned by mutual agreement" at Barnet today. Currently sitting in 10th place, three points off the playoffs, the former Netherlands midfielder decided to leave the Conference side and their new home at The Hive.

Today's 2-1 loss away at struggling Chester was the final nail in the coffin for Davids, but his departure has been on the cards for a while. Just last month Davids threatened to retire after he was dismissed by a referee. He slammed the officials saying that he was being 'targeted' and that some decisions to dismiss him were 'exaggerated'. Although no man could argue with the red card he received below for elbowing Wrexham's Stephen Wright last October.

In his 38 appearances for the London based team, he received a total of 5 red cards and one goal. To put that into perspective, David's almost averaged one red card for every eight games.

Boosting an impressive CV as a player, making appearances for Ajax, AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Barcelona, it is fair to say that Barnet was not the most luxurious of places to play or manage for the ex-Netherlands international. There were even rumours that Davids did not like to travel with the team to away games. Did that mean that he felt his presence wasn't needed? Or could he just not be bothered to put his all in? I await to see where the 40 year old ends up next.
